To assist in co-ordinating the use of the technology the BDS Virtual Model has been developed to track critical information on a construction project. Utilising Tekla software’s open API (application programming interface), BDS has written a custom program that links the Tekla model directly to an external database.

The development has combined the power of a database for the storing and analysis of data with the visual management of the Tekla model through a graphical interface. Using BDS’ in-house programmers the Virtual Model can be customized to suit a specific project requirement.

For activities that are considered important and require tracking BDS has designed custom data collection sheets which are completed by field personnel and then electronically imported into the construction model for evaluation.

The information can be uploaded into the database directly or through the Tekla model interface giving maximum flexibility in the gathering of the information. In the past this was done by hand.

The Virtual model consists of the following modules:

• RFI – Automated RFI creation and logging tool for the handling of RFI’s
• DCN – Tool for the tracking of design change impacts
• Drawings – Integrated system for logging drawing submittals and creating Transmittals directly from the Tekla model
• Approval – Logs in returned approval drawings for easy reference within the Tekla model
• Hold – Report generator that checks drawing submittals against drawing impacts
