Tekla Model - Crystals Mall, City Center, Las Vegas

The Crystals Mall of the City Center project is a Daniel Libeskind designed retail mall, located at the heart of the Las Vegas strip. This 11,000ton structure consists of numerous curved and inclined trusses hidden within the crystalline metal clad shapes which form the distinctive roofs. During the project, 3D models were passed between architect, engineer and BDS for coordination between the steelwork and other trades. The successful completion of this project was reliant on BDS’s advanced use of the 3D detailing software, Tekla Structures.

Banners Children’s Hospital

Banner Children’s Hospital

The Banner Desert Medical Centre, located in Arizona, expanded their facility to include a New 2,900 ton Children’s Hospital. The 7-storey main building towers above several lower building structures. There are many curved beams and angled concrete floors giving this building a sculptured look. A total of 10,480 drawings were issued for fabrication. To assist with the co-ordination of other trades, 3D steel models were provided to the General Contractor on a weekly basis.

In early 2005, the ground was broken for a 3 Phase, 11,000tons of structural steel Luxury Residential condominium project in central Scottsdale, Arizona, overlooking the majestic Camel View Mountain which included eleven, 7 story Buildings. Optima Inc.’s Camelview Village in Scottsdale, with its shady overhangs and large outdoor spaces, is an example of projects influenced by legendary architect, Frank Lloyd Wright. David Hovey Jr., owner of Optima and the architect behind Camelview Village, acknowledges his project was influenced indirectly by Fallingwater, with long cantilevers and overhangs to encourage shade. He also says Camelview’s large outdoor spaces-with strong vertical and horizontal lines to encourage air flow –reflect Wright’s principles. In addition, Camelview Village is one of the first buildings in metropolitan Phoenix to incorporate solar power in a systematic way.

The Seattle Central Library is a building of 12-story glass clad, asymmetrical building with multiple cantilevers which are vertically stacked with sloping surfaces, and dramatic geometric angles. The glass cladding structure is involving 10,000 glass diamond panels, 4,644 tons of steel, and 165,000 feet of aluminium mullions. The glass cladding is in a diamond pattern and the architects’ desire was for a transparent building that floated with no apparent means of support.

Avon Valley School

Avon Valley School

The school specialises in Performing Arts and so the design for the new building included indoor theatre space as well as a range of modern facilities. The new building sweeps into a crescent shape, providing a curve design within the layout. Achieving this meant there were not many square grids required within the project. Therefore, setting out the points to each column location meant detailed coordination between the on-site team and the main contractor to ensure the columns were set exactly and specifically to the design.
